Learn About Different Types of Whitewater Kayak Paddles

One of the types of whitewater kayak paddles you can choose for your inflatable kayak is the Sea Eagle line of collapsible paddles. These are designed for use in the Transom boats and connect with the oarlock pins enabling you to paddle a lot faster. This is one of the factors that you need to consider when choosing a kayak paddle – how well the paddles can handle the boat.

The collapsible kayak paddles that Sea Eagle sells are suitable for whitewater. The AB 40 eight-foot paddle has an asymmetrical design. This is something you need to consider when choosing a paddle. The asymmetrical design of a paddle gives you smooth entry in whitewater and an even pull. Using this type of design lets you maximize the power of your stroke. The asymmetrical model has composite fiberglass blades and an aluminum shaft. It comes apart in the middle, making it very easy to carry and store.

The AB 20 kayak paddle is also eight feet in length. The AB 20 gives you better reach when paddling. This model comes with a snap pin, allowing you to choose between a feathered or straight paddle position. You might also consider choosing regular oars that will help row a Sea Eagle 6, 8 or 9 kayak at an amazingly fast pace. These oars have plastic blades and aluminum shafts and are less than 6 feet long. Because of the plastic, they are not the best paddles to choose for whitewater kayaking.

When you are choosing paddles for your whitewater kayak, you need to look for a design with feathered or offset blades between 30 and 90 degrees. This gives your right hand control of the paddles so that as you rotate the dip, your right hand retains its grip. Your left hand will open a bit to allow the paddle to rotate.

The best whitewater paddle for a beginner to choose is the 195-cm paddle. A beginner can figure out the right size by gripping the paddle about four or five inches from the blades and lifting it above his/her head. In this position, the elbows should be at a 90 degree angle.

Whitewater paddles for kayaking in rough water need to be strong. The best paddles to choose are those made of fiberglass because they are light, durable and relatively inexpensive. Some boating enthusiasts prefer wood laminate paddles for their kayak because they, too, are quite strong.
