Safety in a Sea Kayak
If you are new to ocean kayaking, take some sea kayak lessons before
heading out on your own. You will have a better time if you know what to do in
varying current and weather conditions. Take it easy in the beginning and stick
to calmer waters. Once you get the hang of handling a kayak in the open sea, you
will be ready for more. Accidents and injuries are too common when inexperienced
kayakers try to brave rough seas.
Be sure to choose a seaworthy kayak that is made for use in the ocean. Kayaks
are rated according to their use. Taking one that is made for a river into the
open sea can be deadly. Different styles and materials are used for rivers,
whitewater, coastal waters and the open seas. The best ocean kayaks are between
sixteen and twenty one feet long. The color of the kayak is another
consideration for a safer trip. It’s best to stay away from blues and greens
that will blend with the sea water. Select a color that will offer better
visibility in an emergency situation.
Become familiar with the area of the ocean where you will be kayaking. Take some
time to learn about the ocean’s current and tides and any dangerous areas that
should be avoided. A compass or GPS system will help you find your way at sea,
if you get disoriented in your kayak. This will help prevent you from
unknowingly wandering into an unsafe situation. It’s best to ask someone
familiar with the waters in the area of the sea you plan to kayak. If you can’t
find someone, visit the local bait shop. Fishermen talk and the owner of the
store will have the best knowledge to help you plan your kayaking adventure on
the open seas.
Every state has laws regarding the use of personal floatation devices and the
proper use of boating accessories. Wearing a life jacket while kayaking on the open ocean can save your life in the event of
an emergency. It’s not only better but mandatory to wear your life jacket. Don’t
assume you will be able to grab it if you need it. Accidents happen fast at sea
and you most likely won’t be able to get to it in time.
