Follow these Common-Sense Boating Safety Tips
Before heading out on the water it’s a good idea to read up on boating safety
tips and the newest federal boating laws. Inflatable boat safety equipment such
as USCG approved lifejackets is now mandatory equipment. The federal lifejacket
law is enforced by the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Park Service and other
federal enforcement agencies so don’t get caught without one.
In addition to the federal water sports regulations there are state boating laws
and license requirements in effect which differ from state to state. Passing a
boat safety course will increase your skills on the water and will entitle you
to a discount on boat insurance. Here are some tips on equipping inflatable boats to ensure everyone’s safety:
-
Safety Tip #1 – Lifejackets
Carry a U.S. Coast Guard approved life vest or PDF (personal floatation
device) for everyone onboard. Wear your life jacket, don’t sit on it!
-
Safety Tip #2 – Signaling Devices
Equip your inflatable with a sound-producing device such as a signal horn
and a visual distress device such as a flare.
-
Safety Tip #3 – Inflatable Boat Equipment
Carry an inflatable boat repair
kit, a bellows pump, spare oars or paddles, ropes, a first aid kit and
(for larger boats using outboard motors) a fire extinguisher and anchor.
-
Safety Tip #4 – Take an Educational Course
Most recreational boating accidents are caused by inexperienced operators.
Equip yourself with knowledge and learn the rules and regulations to pass your
license and safety examination. Learn the rules as they apply to inflatables.
Recreational boating accidents can be prevented by following these common-sense
safety tips. Taking an educational boating
safety course is your best insurance towards safe
water activities. You can also have your inflatable and its equipment checked by
participating in the Vessel Safety Check program, a free public service provided
by the U.S. Coast Guard.
